Coastal Structures as Beach Erosion Control and Sea Level Rise Adaptation in Malaysia: A Review

نویسندگان

چکیده

The shoreline of Malaysia is exposed to threats coastal erosion and a rise sea level. National Coastal Erosion Study, 2015 reported that 15% an 8840 km currently eroding, where one-third those falls under the critical significant categories require structural protection. Study Sea Level Rise in Malaysia, 2017 presented sea-level increase 0.67–0.74 mm on average yearly. This study reviewed selected protection structures along as control adaptation based management strategies. Hard such rock revetment breakwater are commonly used systems “hold line” strategy. Increased platform level seawalls earth bunds, considered “adaptation” approach, effective adaptive rise. Mangrove replanting suitable “limited intervention” approach minimizing long-term impact both threats. However, offshore breakwater, groyne, geotextile tubes solely for purposes not adaptation. As continuously increasing, their function will also become less effective. In summary, this comprehensive review benefit related agencies future assessment.

Modelling Coastal Vulnerability and Adaptation to Sea Level Rise

Coastal regions are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR) therefore developing and implementing effective adaptation alternatives is crucial for their future development. However, there is uncertainty in the timing, duration, spatial location and extent of SLR and storms. The complexity that arises from climate, coastal systems and their interactions in space and time can easily become over...

Sea-Level Rise and Adaptation Responses for Coastal Construction: A Spatial-Temporal Decision Making Tool

Most infrastructure, settlements and facilities are located near the coast and are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR), coastal erosion and storms. Continued population growth in low-lying coastal areas will increase vulnerability to these hazards. The impacts of SLR are highly variable across regions and difficult to predict over time and space. Principally, due to constraints on the ada...

Thresholds of sea‐level rise rate and sea‐level rise acceleration rate in a vulnerable coastal wetland

Feedbacks among inundation, sediment trapping, and vegetation productivity help maintain coastal wetlands facing sea-level rise (SLR). However, when the SLR rate exceeds a threshold, coastal wetlands can collapse. Understanding the threshold helps address key challenges in ecology-nonlinear response of ecosystems to environmental change, promotes communication between ecologists and resource ma...

Coastal flood damage and adaptation costs under 21st century sea-level rise.

Coastal flood damage and adaptation costs under 21st century sea-level rise are assessed on a global scale taking into account a wide range of uncertainties in continental topography data, population data, protection strategies, socioeconomic development and sea-level rise. Uncertainty in global mean and regional sea level was derived from four different climate models from the Coupled Model In...

Chapter 7: POTENTIAL COASTAL EROSION OF THE SWAN COASTAL PLAIN DUE TO LONG- TERM SEA LEVEL RISE

It is highly likely that coastal erosion due to long-term sea level rise associated with global warming will have a significant impact on Australia’s coastal systems, and any associated infrastructure, over the next century. Long-term coastal erosion is thought to occur largely through sudden-onset storm events. Therefore, attempting to quantify this natural hazard is critical to future develop...
